Research On Sustainable Energy

Laying the foundation of a sustainable smart grid requires transforming today’s power grid into a more consumer-centric system in which a significant portion of energy stems from green sources and consumer-owned devices.  By participating in the research project described below, you will be contributing to the body of knowledge required for this transformation.  And you’ll earn some cash too!

Researchers at Rutgers University are seeking participants for a 1-2 hour online study of consumer participation in the nation’s electrical energy grid.  The study involves a simulated scenario – think of it as a game – in which participants will be asked to imagine that they have a means of generating their own electricity (for example, solar panels or windmill), a battery system to store the electricity, and a way to profit by selling excess electricity back to the power company.  In the simulation, the price paid by the power company for consumer-generated electricity will vary from day to day much as it does in a real power grid.  Your task will be to maximize your profits by selling your electricity when prices are highest.

As a participant, you will play the “game” by answering 1 or 2 brief questions to each of 68 emails that present the offered price on successive days of simulation.  It will take no more than one or two minutes to answer each email so you will make decisions for all 68 days of the simulation in less than two hours. All participants who play the game to the end earn a minimum of $25.  If you will sell your excess energy to the power company for more than $25 you will get what you earn. In addition, the three most successful participants – those who earn the most from selling their excess electricity – will receive additional bonuses of $100, $50, and $25.  If you play the game well and sell when prices are highest you can earn over $100.

Participant Requirements:

-          You must be at least 21 years of age.

-          You must own a home and be the primary decision maker in your household for paying the utility bills.

-          You must have a computer, tablet or cell phone with internet access.

-          Must have an email address.

-Must be available for one of the online game sessions during which you must respond to 68 emails.
