Parental Narcissism (7)

Dear potential participant,

My name is John Nick Leggio and I am a doctoral candidate at Adler University in Chicago, Illinois. I am conducting a study to help understand the mental health effects of parental narcissism on adult children. The results of this study are intended to investigate the relationship between having a parent who is deemed narcissistic and one’s adjustment in adulthood. Your participation would be very valuable in increasing our understanding of this experience.

Narcissism exists on a spectrum, ranging from healthy to unhealthy narcissism. For the purpose of this study, the term “parental narcissism” is not used to refer to a clinical diagnosis, but instead will be used as a descriptor for a series of primary caregiver traits consistent with definitions of unhealthy (grandiose) narcissism. Primary caregivers with grandiose narcissism possess highly inflated, unrealistically positive views of the self. Oftentimes, this includes strong self-focus, feelings of entitlement, and a lack of regard for others (i.e. lack of empathy). Primary caregivers who exhibit grandiose narcissism often focus on what benefits them personally, with less regard for how their actions may benefit or harm others. These patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving is thought to have a negative impact on the children of narcissistic parents.

Specifically, I am looking for any individual 25 and older who has had a least one primary caregiver growing up. A primary caregiver is the person who took primary responsibility for you growing up. This could have been a family member (parent, grandparent, uncle, aunt, etc.),foster parent, adoptive parent, friend, or another individual. Should you meet this criteria, I hope that you will consider participating in the study below. If you are interested in the study, please read through the informed consent and click “agree” if you would like to continue to the study. Your participation in this study is completely anonymous and voluntary. At the end of the survey, you will be invited to participate in a raffle drawing for one of four $25 Amazon Gift Cards. To participate, you will only need to provide your preferred email address. Raffle participation will not effect survey results or be linked to survey responses in any way. The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete.
