Deakin University's Couple Clash Study

Deakin University's Science of Adult Relationships (SoAR) Laboratoty and a team of international researchers are inviting same-sex and heterosexual couples to take part in a 12-month longitudinal study of romantic relationships, called "Couple CLASH: Conflict, Love, Attitudes, Sex, & Hardships".

The purpose of Couple CLASH is to investigate how couple's life experiences, stress, substance use, attitudes and personalities predict their positive and negative behaviour in their romantic relationships over time.

Couple CLASH aims to collect longitudinal self-report data and two sets of live discussion tasks with your partner (which will be video-recorded). To be involved in Couple CLASH, you and your partner must be willing and able to participate together, over the age of 18, fluent in English, and living in Australia.

What's involved?

At the start of the study, couples will meet via a video call on Zoom with members of the Couple CLASH research team. During the video call you will be asked to complete a survey and participate in a set of brief discussion tasks which will be video-recorded. It is expected that this appointment will take no longer than 90 minutes.

Following this, couples will be contacted once every 3-months over a 12-month period to complete an online survey about aspects of your relationship, substance use, stress, conflict, attitudes, and personality. It is expected that these surveys will take no longer than 30 minutes to complete.

At the end of 12-months, couples will meet with a Couple CLASH team member again to complete the final survey and participate in a second set of brief, video-recorded discussion tasks. It is expected that this final appointment will take no longer than 90 minutes.

It is expected that the total time involved in participating in this study will be approximately 5.5 hours over a 12-month period.

What do we get for participating?

Upon completion of your participation in the study, you and your partner will receive:

  • a $100 (AUD) gift voucher to share,
  • a relationship enrichment package with tips and information on how to maintain a satisfying and positive relationship, and
  • free access to a well-regarded, international online couple therapy program.
